Just a couple of days back we had seen the inauguration of Miguel Caballero’s clothing line in South Africa. But three years back closer to the Columbian designer’s home, the Miguel Caballero bulletproof store had opened at Polanco district of Mexico City. Mexico, with its escalating crime rate, where private security is an 18 billion dollars thriving industry, the $400 to $7000 bulletproof apparels have gained instant popularity among the wealthy citizens of the country. In the last one and a half years, sales of Caballero’s bulletproof clothing increased by 25 -30 percent. Besides the traditional bulletproof vests that are much in demand from people working in the Mexican government departments, Caballero also has designer bulletproof clothes in store. The women’s waistcoats with fur-lined hoods, the traditional Mexican shirts, or the temperature regulating Italian leather jackets might be a bit too heavy for the wearer but this is a small price Mexicans must pay to save themselves from the MP5 sub-machine gun bullets.
