In Australia, winters are months ahead, but the forthcoming season’s fashion trends are already on sale.

People are still vacationing on beaches, but designer David Jones’ show last week marked the start of Australia’s winter retail season. Myer too is well stocked with winter woollies, Country Road has put leggings and jumper dresses on display and every other shoe store is full of calf-high boots.

The show is a very important signal for the start of the season. We all look forward to the start of a new season - it is a part of life, and fashion very much celebrates this,

says Colette Garnsey, David Jones’ group general manager for apparel, cosmetics, footwear and accessories.

Check out these key items for the season ahead...

Short dresses in the form of sweater, tunic, trapeze, smock and shift in tweed and plaid will be the fashion code for the season. Empire line dresses will be must haves of the season.

Stock a lot of cropped jackets. Experiment with sleeve length, double or single breasted and length. As far as colors go red is hot. Grey, white and navy are must haves too.

Pants will be slim with a sleek, neat silhouette. Neatly tailored pants in both black and white will be abundantly seen this fashion season.

The ultra comfy ballet shoe in animal print and metallic colors will be the staple footwear of the season. A pair of round-toe stacked heel shoes is a must have.

The oversized tote is a must have in the closet of every fashionista. Classics from Gucci, Dior, Fendi, Prada, Chloe and Louis Vuitton are good investments but if you can’t afford Mimco, Witchery, Oroton and Jag are good substitutes.
