Green is bling with everybody from Hollywood glitterati to your neighbourhood grocer jumping onto the green bandwagon in a big way and now we have come a full circle to find ourselves staring straight at one very big question, How green is green? Coming from the thought provoking Mercedes Benz Fashion week, showcasing green fashion by the Gallery Los Angeles, this question has stirred up a hornet’s nest among the green brigade. The show which showcased ultra chic designs, mostly made by ethical means with recycled and organic fibers came up croppers, because of the high energy costs to get to the venue itself.
Picture this, You go to a green fashion show and to get there, you drive a gas guzzling SUV which emits a zillion grams of carbon dioxide, not to mention the umpteen gallons of fuel the SUV burns up. How green and eco friendly is all this? Very ungreen indeed. And going into the fashion show itself, what about the energy used by the umpteen lights that light up the ramp, the paper laden, non green goody bags or even the hordes of plastic bottles littering the outside of the venue which brings us back to square one.
Ofcourse, the six fashion designers, have to be lauded for using recycled and organic fibers and using ethical labour practices to make these chic fashion goods, the fact remains the fashion show in which all this was showcased was terribly Nongreen. Talk about killing the golden goose for a single golden egg. Lets hope that the designers take notice of these glaring problems and hopefully in the future we will have online fashion shows to spare our fragile planet from all that pollution and energy inefficiency that such shows cause.
