May 1st, Kate Moss will launch her debut (with stylist Katy England) fashion line for Sir Philip Green at Topshop, describing the collection as “just bits from my closet”. She is being paid £3m to produce this fashion range.
British fashion designer and former Clothes Show host, Jeff Banks, criticizes Kate openly for doing nothing more than opening up her own wardrobe. His quote for Moss collection is,
I’ll bet she just grabbed one of her many Prada bags, rifled through her wardrobe... and turned up at Topshop’s head office in Oxford Street for a quick hour’s briefing with the in-house designers and buying staff... Can Kate sharpen a pencil or draw a matchstick man? I wouldn’t put money on it.”
Banks questioned the amount of input famous faces such as Kate Moss and Madonna had in their clothing ranges at Topshop and H&M. For him it was “unfair” of people to become celebrity designers while those who train for years are pushed out. He claimed that he is ‘not against celebrity endorsement’ and asked Madonna the proofs of her sketches.
Topshop spokesperson hit back at Banks attack saying:
Kate Moss has had a huge input in the range from every level, from the design concept of the garments to the fitting and the logo. The fashion industry may be a different place to the one Jeff Banks is used to. Top designers like John Galliano don’t cut patterns, they have pattern cutters. That’s the industry. Kate Moss isn’t a full-time member of staff and she isn’t a trained fashion designer, however we see her as a fashion icon.’
He asserted that Kate has been in fashion industry since she was 14. He said, “She’s hardly in a factory stitching clothing, but she’s been totally involved from the beginning.”
Kate’s collection comprises of fifty designs - includes clothes, bags, shoes and belts. Prices range from £12 for a vest top to £150 for a cropped leather jacket. The range will be on sale at 225 Topshop stores and Kate will herself play the mannequin to mark the launch of her Topshop range.
