chino side lacing corset
Recycled fashion? Yes, it means you transform discarded clothes and make them part of hot haute couture collection. St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco every year organizes a charitable fashion show-cum-auction, ‘Discarded to Divine,’ that invites designers to show off their creativity in materializing rags into designer clothes. The proceeds from the function go to the poor and homeless.

An interesting item to be showcased in this year’s show will be a creation from Rebecca Howard of Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, San Francisco. She has converted the remains of seven pairs of women’s chino pants into a delectable hand-dyed side-lacing corset. To ensure less use of dyes, she also sorted some scrap left-over from cut and sew process and matched them to give the shaded green color to her creation.

If Rebecca Howard’s creation is one of the items at this year’s ‘Discarded to Divine’ show, then it would be worth taking a peek at the rest of the collection. I thought they were only talking about recycled cans and papers but recycling clothes is truly going green!

Update:

This garment has been juried into the runway show on the 26th of March and that it will be displayed in the window at Barney\’s in SF between the 18th-25th of April.
