“Size zero” has ablazed the fashion industry and the authorities keep taking one-step or the other to extinguish this fire. On Wednesday, a panel of fashion and health experts in Britain said that girls below 16-years should be banned from catwalk modeling. This decision was taken on a verge to protect these young ladies from eating disorder and sexual exploitation.
Baroness Kingsmill, chairperson of the panel, said:
There was also strongly expressed concern that it is profoundly inappropriate that girls under 16 ... should be portrayed as adult women.
The Model Health Inquiry also emphasized that better training for designers and agents should be there to help them trace models with eating disorders and shows should be “demonstrably” drug-free. This means backstage smoking will also be forbidden.
The inquiry was set in response to concerns with regard to the use of ultra-thin models during last year’s London fashion week.
Many reasons are held responsible for eating disorder like stress, abuse, poor working conditions and a fear of losing the job if they are not thin enough.
